Project Description

John W. Nixon from Eagle Lake Woodworking demonstrates how to build an Arched-Top keepsake made from Cocobolo. This unique arched-top keepsake box is an eye catching item with a unique feature on the inside - a place to frame a picture. The process for making a dovetailed box is detailed in this video, as well as, the procedure for shaping the arched lid.

This 15 minute video covers:

  • Resawing / Bookmatching.
  • Making a dovetailed box.
  • Shaping the arched top on the router table.
  • Installing a lid support hinge.
  • Tung oil finish.
  • Procedure for gluing cocobolo.

Thanks.  I originally tried the back edge alignment/mortise but for some reason that didn't come out right.  After filling the mis-placed holes, I tried the super glue to hold the hinges in place while I marked and drilled the screw holes and that worked fine.  Just have to be careful to not use too much superglue since the finish has yet to be put on the recipe box I'm making for the better half.  Zebrawood w/natural finish.

Hi Bob,
Those hinges are pretty tricky.  I don't think you missed anything in the video - I went back and watched it and you're quite right, there's no mention of the alignment procedure for the lid to the box.

What I concentrated on when I made the shallow mortise for the hinge to sit in was to position it so the back side of the hinge was flush with the back side of the box.

Knowing that I want my lid aligned with that same back edge, I positioned the lid so that the back edge of the hinge was aligned with the edge of the lid.  I used a little super glue to hold the lid in place while I put the screws in.

I hope this helps a bit.

Hi Jeff.  It sort of depends on the wood and the finish.  In this case, the cocobolo was getting a light oil finish (nothing built up), and the wood was as dense as any I've ever worked with.  I tried to keep the corners crisp with only a slight knock down (220 sandpaper only).

I made another one of these boxes from red oak, and I did round the edges over a bit more (still by sanding).

A couple of thoughts after looking at you box. Your craftsmanship is very good and the overall concept of the box is excelent. You may want to give some thought to the following, for my eye the box is to "heavy" the material for the sides could have been 1/2 as thick or less, when spliting a box after assembly it tends to balance better if you split one of the dovetails evenly, I would have recessed each hinge piece equaly. Good work keep it up.
